Is your gas stove top not working properly?
Does your range burner smell like gas when you turn it on, yet it won’t light? You may have a clogged burner port.
Surface burners on a gas range need to be maintained in order to function properly. Always make sure you’re cleaning your burner cap after spills, splashes and overflows. A clean burner cap assists with consistent flames and a properly functioning ignitor.
To clean your your burners and ports
We always recommend referring to your Use and Care Guide provided by your manufacturer. However, these instructions come from just that, so feel free to follow along:
- Make sure all of your controls are off and your burners are cool.
- Remove the grates from your burners.
- Remove the burner cap from the burner base and clean with soap, water and a soft cloth.
- Clean clogged burner ports with a straight pin. DO NOT enlarge ports, distort ports or use a wooden toothpick. See image right.
- Replace burner cap. Make sure the alignment pins are properly lined up with the burner cap.
- Replace surface grates.
- It’s the moment of truth. Turn the burner on. If it lights, you have success. If not, go back to Step 5.
Pro tip – After step 7, we suggest to let the burner stay on for two or three minutes to make sure the burner cap is completely dry, this will prevent rust in the long run.
