On August 28th, 2019, a Whirlpool cooktop recall was announced due to safety concerns. In accordance with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, this recall applies to about 26,300 Whirlpool, JennAir, and KitchenAid glass cooktops.
The recall was issued after 133 reports of specific cooktop models turning on by themselves. If you purchased a Whirlpool, KitchenAid, or JennAir glass cooktop within the past two years, read on to find out if your unit qualifies.
It’s unknown what’s causing the Whirlpool glass cooktop turning on by itself. The possible results of such a defect pose burn and fire risks. However, Whirlpool acknowledges the safety hazards and urges consumers to contact them as soon as possible.
Out of the 133 reports of cooktops turning on without being touched, only 14 cases involved property damage and 2 cases of minor burn-related injuries. Whirlpool is taking this malfunction very seriously and will replace any unit affected by the recall at no cost to the consumer.
So how do you know if your unit qualifies? Locate the model number, which is found on the bottom of the cooktop. Whirlpool models begin with W, KitchenAid with K, and JennAir with J. Once you’ve found the number, refer to the list below.
